Using Apple Photos To Organize Your Family’s Photos

Using Apple Photos To Organize Your Family's Photos | Good Life Photo Solutions

Recently I was getting my first pedicure of the year and decided to catch up on some blog reading while I was getting pampered. That’s when I came across two great blogs about using Apple Photos to organize your family’s photos on your iPhone and when seated in front of your Mac.

I’ve been an all Apple person since 2012 and I am unapologetically happy with my choice. I am also someone who loves a good set of instructions. Click here, select that, push this. It’s how I write out instructions for my clients (and sometimes even myself). These two blog posts do just that – give you the ins and outs of the basic photo organizing tasks you can do with the Photos app on the iPhone and the Photos desktop version in an easy-to-understand, step-by-step manner.

Organizing Your Photos Using Apple Photos on Your iPhone

This first blog post is a Photography Playground guest post written by my amazing colleague Caroline Gunter, AKA The Swedish Organizer. When it comes to digital photo organizing, Caroline knows her stuff! I’ve taken several of her online and in-person courses and she’s always teaching me something new.

One of my favorite quotes from the article is “As someone who organizes for a living, I can tell you that the most underutilized feature on any device is actually the delete button.” I wholeheartedly agree. Delete, delete, delete. The delete button is your friend.

Organizing Your Photos Using Apple Photos on Your Mac

If you are taking pictures on your iPhone and you also own a Mac (hello, Apple Ecosystem! I love it!), you should be taking advantage of everything the desktop version of Apple Photos has to offer. Right now all of my clients are exclusively Apple when it comes to devices and laptops/desktops. It makes the world an easier place to navigate as far as photos are concerned.

This blog post from iMore covers a wide range of how-tos to get the most from your Mac and Photos. From adding photos to albums, using smart albums (one of my favorite features) to migrating your Photos library to an external hard drive to free up space on your computer’s hard drive, it’s full of useful tips.

Like you, I’m an all Mac person and have been for two decades. I also take a ton of photos with my iPhone. So anything I can learn about how to manage these photos better will be beneficial. I’ll check out the articles you suggested. I’m particularly interested in freeing up some storage space on my desktop. I have A LOT of photos and videos there. Even though they get backed-up, I still keep most of them easily accessible. I realize this isn’t necessary and know I need to do something about it.

For organizing your photos easier on iPhone, you could have a look at the Utiful Photo Organizer on the App Store. It’s a new app targeted to make photo organization what it should really be – an easy and rewarding activity.

I am a Mac person, and I do find all of this a bit overwhelming. One of my issues is that it never feels “done.” When I used to work with printed photos, I put them in an album and that was that. Now, I feel like I need to keep relearning new tools, and dealing with the way the app works in a new operating system, etc. I admit that photos aren’t really my favorite hobby, but I also acknowledge that I should sharpen my skills in this area. Been reading the articles you linked:)

I am an iPhone / iPad user as well as a PC user. Since I use the PC most of the time, I tend to organize my photos on the PC, but I do have albums on my iPhone when I want to keep a collection together. However, when it downloads to my PC, It doesn’t save the folder, and I have to create it again, so I don’t use this feature on my iPhone often.

I would love to go all Mac but with my bookkeeping business, it is more difficult because the software I use work better on PC, not Mac. Maybe someday I will buy a Mac when I retire from the bookkeeping business. =)

The iOS app Utiful Photo Organizer could maybe help you to organize better straight on your iPhone and then easily export the result as folders to your PC. It’s a new app target to make photo organization what it should really be – an easy and rewarding activity.

I switched from all PC/Android to all Mac last year and have never really felt quite organized since. 🙁 So I can use all the help I can get. Thanks for the helpful posts!
