Slide Storage Solutions: How to Keep Your Family’s Memories Safe
Did your family take a lot of slides?
35mm slide film was a popular photo format in the 50s and 60s, capturing countless memories for generations. So, where are those slides today? Maybe they’re stored in boxes or bags—or perhaps collecting dust in a stack of 27 carousels at the top of the hall closet. When was the last time you even looked at them?
At Good Life Photo Solutions, we strongly recommend scanning your slides to create digital images you can enjoy for years to come. But what happens after the scanning is done? It’s time to think about how you’ll store those precious originals.
Why You Need Safe Slide Storage
You might be wondering why your old family slides need special storage. There are a few good reasons. First and foremost: space. If your slides are still in projector carousels, they take up a lot of room! By switching to archival slide storage, you can significantly reduce the space they occupy in your home.
Another issue: the original boxes the slides came in are likely deteriorating. Over time, the adhesive on these boxes weakens, leaving you with piles of loose slides instead of neatly stored ones. The cardboard can also become musty, which is something you don’t want lingering in your home.
Slide Storage Solutions
One of our favorite options for safe, compact slide storage is the Slide Storage Kit from Archival Methods. These kits come in two sizes: one for 1,200 35mm slides and one for 2,400 35mm slides. They also work for glass-mounted slides. Each kit includes a sturdy archival cardboard box with smaller boxes inside, as well as slide tray bins and dividers for easy organization and labeling. If you don’t need to store such a large number of slides, you can also purchase smaller boxes separately.
Another option is slide binder pages, which hold up to 20 slides per page and can be added to any binder. This is a good solution if you’d like easy access to your slides, but it’s not the most space-efficient choice. If your main goal is saving space while keeping your slides organized and safe, we recommend exploring other options.
Why Slide Storage Is Important
You may be wondering why we’re even suggesting you store your slides after they’ve been scanned. The reason is simple: those slides are your original film—and they’re an important backup to your newly digitized memories. By moving them out of those bulky carousels and deteriorating boxes into more compact, durable storage, you not only save space in your home but also ensure that your original slides remain safe and accessible.
Location is Important Too
Don’t forget that where you store your slides is important too! Even the highest quality archival boxes won’t save your slides if they are in a bad location.
Ideally, you want a location that is climate-controlled, away from water sources, pest-free, and easily accessible. So NO attics or garages!
If you need help scanning, organizing, or preserving your family’s slides, Good Life Photo Solutions is at your service. Let’s get your precious memories digitized, safely stored and ready for future generations to enjoy!
